Why take chorus?

THE PEOPLE ARE THE BEST. Lightridge Chorus has a diverse group of students with different interests who come together because of their shared passion for music. There is no one type of student in chorus. Meaningful friendships are created through engaging rehearsals, trips for performances, and leadership opportunities. Lightridge Chorus is known for its strong community and supportive culture - as well as its musical excellence! Lightridge Chorus has the biggest choral program in VA with 175 students.

Honors Music becomes an option for students in high school chorus starting their freshman year. Successful completion of these requirements will result in an additional 0.5 boost for the chorus class you are already signed up for. This is only offered in music electives at the beginning of high school.

Music courses help students create diversity for their college applications. Creativity is valued in the college acceptance process. A sequential music elective also showcases long-term commitment, diligence, and creativity. Sequential electives are a requirement for graduation. Students utilize the skills learned in chorus in all aspects of their lives.

Chorus was always a safe space for me throughout high school. Being able to work towards a common goal together as a diverse group was unique and special to my high school experience. The ability to physically hear our hard work pay off in a classroom setting was always magical. I also had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people who all had the same appreciation for music that I did. Many of the friends I made in chorus became my closest friends throughout high school. As a college student, I miss the community and magic that being in chorus brought me on almost a daily basis. It’s one of the things I miss most about high school.

One of my supplemental essay prompts when I was applying to UVA in my senior year of high school was: Take us to your happy place. For this 60 word supplemental I wrote, “In this room we are one voice, and yet every voice is distinct. Here, our problems, weaknesses, and differences do not matter. Our voices matter. Music matters. Here, in Ms. Karim’s chorus room, I am a leader among my peers in what I am most passionate about. Here, I embrace my freedom to sing, to listen, and to be heard.” Today I’m a first year computer science student at UVA, and as I’m writing this I’m sitting in front a piano in UVA’s Old Cabell Hall fitting in a quick practice session before my next class because if there’s one thing I took away from being apart of Lightridge Chorus it’s this: music is an inevitable part of life.

Lightride Chorus is all about having a family in school that pushes you to be the best version of yourself. Spending time with the friends I’ve made in chorus has given me the most amazing memories and it makes high school a good experience overall.

I love Lightridge Chorus because of the environment and the people. I feel like I can sing and not worry about how other people in the room perceive me. Mistakes are encouraged and I feel that in Lightridge Chorus!
